Question
For each foot of curtain width, yard of fabric is needed to make ruffles. How many yards of fabric are needed per foot of curtain width?
- A yd
- B yd
- C yd
- D yd
Show the answer
Correct answer: C
It takes yard of fabric to make foot of curtain width.
To find the ratio of 1 foot of curtain width to foot of curtain width , divide.
So the amount of fabric needed for 1 foot of curtain width is times the amount needed for foot of curtain width.
The amount of fabric needed for 1 foot of curtain width is yards.
Question analysis
Making ruffles takes 5/6 yard of fabric for every 3/8 foot of curtain width, and students find how many yards of fabric one foot of curtain width needs. It tests finding a unit rate when both quantities are fractions. The two units differ, and choosing whether to multiply, divide or add the fractions is the crucial decision.

- Compared with grade 7
- At grade 7 Computing a unit rate from a ratio of two fractions is the grade 7 rate standard itself. Two units, feet and yards, and an unfamiliar sewing setting make it harder to see which fraction divides which.

Why it is hard, traps and wrong answers (shows the answer)
Why it is hard
Two fractions and two units, feet and yards, leave students to decide whether to multiply, divide or add, and each wrong choice records one of those decisions. A sense check rules out the most tempting one before any arithmetic: a whole foot is more than 3/8 foot, so it needs more than 5/6 yard, yet multiplying gives only 5/16. Dividing the yards by the feet then picks out the answer among the rest.
Turning words into math moderate Understanding the question
“For each 3/8 foot of curtain width, 5/6 yard of fabric” gives the rate as a pair of fractions, and “per foot” means dividing the yards by the feet. (Hegarty, Mayer & Monk, 1995; Koedinger & Nathan, 2004)
Error-prone arithmetic minor Working it out
Dividing by 3/8 means multiplying by 8/3, and the product 40/18 has to be reduced to 20/9, an improper fraction rather than a whole number. (Brown & Burton, 1978; Junker & Sijtsma, 2001)
Strategy: Divide the yards of fabric by the feet of curtain width, since a rate per foot puts feet in the denominator, then simplify the fraction.
Traps
- Wrong operation: Adds instead of multiplying, divides the wrong way round, turns a ratio or rate upside down, or undoes a step in the wrong direction (subtracts what should be added back).
The wrong answers, classified
A Wrong operation (Hegarty, Mayer & Monk, 1995; King et al., 2004)
Multiplies 5/6 by 3/8 instead of dividing, getting 15/48 = 5/16, so a whole foot seems to need less fabric than 3/8 foot.
B Wrong operation (Hegarty, Mayer & Monk, 1995; King et al., 2004)
Adds 5/6 and 3/8 over a common denominator, 20/24 + 9/24 = 29/24, combining yards with feet instead of forming a rate.
D Wrong operation (Hegarty, Mayer & Monk, 1995; King et al., 2004)
Finds that a foot is 8/3 times 3/8 foot, then adds 8/3 and 5/6 instead of multiplying them: 16/6 + 5/6 = 21/6 = 7/2.
Worked solution, step by step
Formulas used
- Unit rate
- A unit rate tells how much for exactly 1 of something. Here it is yards of fabric for 1 foot of curtain. Per foot means for each foot, so feet go on the bottom. Divide the yards by the feet.
- Dividing by a fraction
- a is any number, and b/c is a fraction. Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal, the fraction flipped upside down. It works because b/c fits into 1 exactly c/b times.
Sort out the question
For every 3/8 foot of curtain width, you need 5/6 yard of fabric. You need the yards of fabric for 1 whole foot. That is a unit rate, an amount for exactly 1 foot.
3/8 foot is less than a whole foot. So a whole foot needs more than 5/6 yard.
Set up the division
Per foot means divide the yards by the feet:
Watch out: multiplying 5/6 by 3/8 gives 5/16, choice A. That is less fabric for more curtain, which makes no sense. Adding them gives 29/24, choice B, but you can’t add yards and feet.
Multiply by the reciprocal
Flip 3/8 to get 8/3, and multiply:
The 8/3 says a whole foot is 8/3 times as long as 3/8 foot. So it needs 8/3 times as much fabric.
Watch out: adding 8/3 and 5/6 gives 7/2, choice D. Multiply them instead.
Simplify the fraction
2 goes into both 40 and 18:
So 1 foot of curtain width needs 20/9 yards of fabric, a little more than 2 yards. So the answer is C, 20/9 yd.
Check your answer
Multiply back. 3/8 foot should need 3/8 of the fabric for a whole foot: yard. That is the amount the question gives. Also, 20/9 is more than 5/6, as it should be.
