Question

Using the approximation 2.54 centimeters = 1 inch, how many centimeters are in 4 feet 7 inches?

  • A21.65
  • B119.38
  • C121.92
  • D139.70
Show the answer

Correct answer: D

Convert 4 ft 7 in. to inches. Since 12 in. = 1 ft :

4(12) + 7 = 55 inches

Multiply that by the conversion

2.54 cm = 1 in.

55 × 2.54 = 139.70 cm

Question analysis

This unit conversion question uses 2.54 centimeters per inch and asks how many centimeters are in 4 feet 7 inches. Students must first turn feet and inches into inches alone, then multiply by the conversion factor. Mixing feet and inches into a single number is the easy slip.

Why it is hard, traps and wrong answers (shows the answer)

Why it is hard

The conversion factor is given and the multiplication is mechanical, so the question rests on the mixed measurement. Feet and inches are not a decimal system, and treating 4 feet 7 inches as 47, or dropping the 7, both lead to listed answers. A rough estimate, 55 inches × 2.5 ≈ 137, points straight to the right choice.

  1. Something you must already know minor Working it out

    The stem gives centimeters per inch but not inches per foot; students must supply 12 to turn 4 feet into 48 inches. (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001)

Strategy: Change 4 feet to inches using 12 inches per foot, add the extra 7 inches, then multiply the total number of inches by 2.54.

Traps

  • Units or scale: The answer is wanted in other units, or a rate or scale must be converted first.
  • Answers a different question: A choice is right for another quantity: the other unknown, the rest instead of the part, the part instead of the whole.

The wrong answers, classified

What was corrected from the DOE handbook, and why

  • Explanation: The handbook writes the conversion as “254 cm = 1 in.”, dropping the decimal point. The question gives 2.54 centimeters = 1 inch and the handbook’s next line multiplies by 2.54, so it now reads 2.54 cm = 1 in.

How the questions are analyzed, and the research behind it

Worked solution, step by step

Formulas used

Feet to inches
i=12×fi = 12 \times f
i is the number of inches and f is the number of feet. Each foot has 12 inches, so you multiply the feet by 12.
Inches to centimeters
c=2.54×ic = 2.54 \times i
c is the number of centimeters and i is the number of inches. Each inch is about 2.54 centimeters, so you multiply. A centimeter is smaller than an inch, so you get a bigger number.
  1. Sort out what you know

    The length is 4 feet 7 inches. That means 4 feet plus 7 more inches. You know 1 inch is about 2.54 centimeters.

    So change everything to inches first, then to centimeters. The question does not say that 1 foot is 12 inches. You have to know it.

  2. Change the length to inches

    i=12×4=48i = 12 \times 4 = 48

    4 feet is 48 inches. Now add the extra 7 inches:

    48+7=5548 + 7 = 55

    The length is 55 inches. Watch out: 4 feet 7 inches is not 47 inches. Using 47 gives choice B. Leaving out the 7 inches gives 121.92, choice C.

  3. Change inches to centimeters

    c=2.54×55=139.70c = 2.54 \times 55 = 139.70

    To multiply in your head, split 55 into 50 and 5: 127 + 12.7 = 139.7.

    Watch out: multiply, do not divide. Dividing 55 by 2.54 gives 21.65, choice A. So the answer is D, 139.70.

Check your answer

A centimeter is smaller than an inch. So the number of centimeters must be bigger than 55. About 2.5 × 55 is 137.5, close to 139.70. Choice A, 21.65, is smaller than 55, so it cannot be right.
